I’m a big fan of Croatia but have only visited in summer. Recently member Secret Dalmatia wrote a great post about Winter hiking in Dalmatia which could persuade me to visit in the off-season, too. It’s not exactly swimming weather but on a sunny winter day, Croatia is still remarkably scenic and this blog post explores various archaeological ruins in Dalmatia which are accessible to anyone (although some might be tricky to find if you don’t have a local with you).

The first ruin mentioned is near Biograd, at Bosana Beach, where there is a very large Roman estate that has never been excavated, although many parts of the ruins are visible. The “lost village” of Vitalići, close to Tinj, also makes for a great walking location, with abandoned houses to explore. Finally, the Vrcevo Hill near Sikovo is mentioned, a great area for an interesting walk with fortresses which have been used through many eras of the areas history.

Partner blog Travel Wonders of the World has a great post this week titled Cyprus: Clubs, Countryside or Castles? The island of Cyprus is certainly a really interesting destination with some many different sightseeing spots and activities for visitors, and the post highlights how there is really something for everybody, no matter what your holiday preferences might be.

If it’s a good night life you’re after, for example, then the clubs on Cyprus have a reputation for being some of the best places to party on the planet! In particular, the resort area at Ayia Napa is the destination you need for endless hours of dancing.

The post also talks about the castles of Cyprus, with numerous ancient ruins (very photogenic ones, at that) to keep history lovers busy during the day.

Kantara Castle in Cyprus by George M. Groutas

And the third attraction of Cyprus is simply the gorgeous countryside, so if you want to be active and get hiking, there’s plenty to do.

Cinque Terre by Jason OX4

Much of the charm of the Cinque Terre villages is the fact that they are arranged on cliffsides, but of course this means that accessing many places involves long climbs up narrow stairways. That means you need to think about your luggage in advance and make sure you are able to carry it up stairs – very few hotels in the area will provide a service to assist. The Trip Planning Guide post suggests you may even want to check the bulk of your luggage at the La Spezia train station and just take a small bag with you.

The Cinque Terre is well suited to a hiking vacation so get in training ahead of time and you’ll be able to manage the steps with ease.

Partner blogger Heather on her Travels lists some top Salzburg recommendations.

Salzburg, by Pictlux

The suggestions include visiting the 11th century HohenSalzburg fortress on the hill overlooking the town, either by an invigorating walk or picturesque ride by funicular.

The salt mines and pretty lakeside town of Hallstatt, as well as other mines around the city, are all worthwhile visits. The salt formed the basis of the Saltzburg prince archbishops wealth. A guided tour of the Hallstatt mines is recommended.

In Werfen close to Salzburg, is the world’s largest ice cave system. Open from May to October, they caves are reachable by cable car.

The beautiful countryside around Salzburg, e.g. hiking and cycling on the shores of Wolfgangsee, also sounds lovely for a family visit.

More recommendations in the original article.

Of course Salzburg’s the location where the Sound of Music was filmed, just of one of those flicks that make you fall in love with Europe.

Blogging Parner Brilliant Tips showcases a Sete Citades hike in the Azores. These fascinating Portuguese islands in the Atlantic have exceptional landscapes, flora and fauna and an extended hike’s probably one of the best ways to explore them.

Azores, by Chamary

The Azores location right bang in the middle of three tectonic plates, its rich volcanic soils and the weather have resulted in some amazing natural scenery. Lagoa Das Setes Cidades, the Lagoon of the Seven Cities is just such a location.

The high altitudes and the powerful weather patterns of the mid-Atlantic create some fascinating phenomena, e.g. the cloud cover moving swiftly over the Azores at a time scale one can watch at leisure from the height points of this walk.

Fascinating natural scenery, lakes, the ocean and its shores are some of the unmissable and mostly undiscovered ‘sights for sore eyes’ that only some daring visitors discover. These hikers were treated to wonderful sights of a caldera, the Lagoon of the Seven Cities and its two lakes – Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lagoon), with views of Sete Cidades and the shoreline of Sao Miguel to follow. The experience was of a similar level to Hawaii’s Mauna Loa and Greek Santorini.

However, fascinating hiking is only one of the reasons to visit the Azores in Portugal.

This Northern Spanish area is fascinating in its own right and a well kept secret by locals.

Asturias, El Corral del Tiu.., by Toprural

The Asturias area is characterised by mountainous landscapes (eg the Picos de Europa range), medieval villages, green prairies and rolling meadows. It’s well-loved by Spaniards looking for a respite from the heat.

The blog visit to be described in future will include a hiking tour, cultural visits and even a lengthy train ride on the Transcantabrio railway. There will also be visits to historic Avilés, Gijón and coastal Gudillero.

A shepherd-led walk through mountains including traditional meals and cultural arts performances will culminate at the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve of Covadonga Lakes.

Our advice is to also try visiting the lovely capital of Asturias, Oviedo.

Blogger and partner Sharing Travel Experiences discusses hiking the Athenian hills. The hills and mountains of Attica surround the city and permit a refreshing respite from the cacophony and buzz below.

The hills also permit a totally different view and comprehension of the city and you will experience Athens in another dimension. Looking down you should understand more of what the Ancient Greeks saw than simply walking the town.

The Acropolis is the hill of most importance for many. It houses the beautiful Parthenon, permits great views of the cosmopolitan Plaka district and makes you think of the Myceneans and Pericles. The city below and the Parnassus and Hymettus mountains are clearly visible from here.

The Lykavitos Hill, reached via hiking, car or funicular railway, has always been renown for theatre, performing artists and festivals.

From Philipappou street and turning up Areopagitou street, you arrive to stone steps leading up to the Areopagos: this is where Athenian justice took place. Here ancient Greek tombs mingle with early Christianity signs, and it was the location where many famous Greeks were tried. Also where the notion of the ‘unknown God’ was brought to the Greeks by Paul the Apostle.

If you want something a bit more sedate, particularly in the midday summer heat, also see our own guide on discovering Central Athens on foot.

Partner blogger ArtTrav discusses the possibility of urban hiking from Florence to Maiano. Discovering the many delights of Florence on foot is de rigueur, so a hike to nearby Maiano sounds like pretty good fun too.

Walking in Florence, by Miles Heller

The free and healthy activity is a two-hour walk from the end of via Lungo l’Affrico in Campo di Marte (reachable by bus no17) through fields and up to Maiano, then returning in the Coverciano direction. This walk does not require incredible amounts of fitness.

An excellent interactive map of the walk is provided in the original article and the walk takes you through both interesting urban terrain and unspoilt Florentine countryside.

The Fattoria di Maiano and its restaurant are recommended as a mid-way stop, unless you’ve already packed your own food. A Romanesque church, the cave di Maiano with a climbing wall and several additional hiking trails in the general direction of Fiesole are also discussed as further possibilities.

Some recommendations are also made for the return walk.

If you’re in the Florence area, you may also wish to visit one of Italy’s most lovely gardens.
