The turbulent Cypriot historic past ensures that a lot of remnants, both archaeological and of the more recent past, are of extreme interest. In addition, the numerous and lovely sandy beaches, the wine trail and the superb mountain scenery will have you spoiled for choice.

The busy industrial port town of Limassol is recommended for vibrant night life and other types of entertainment, with the Old Town the epicentre of all such activity. You can also party in Ayia Napa, then chill out on the white sands of Nissi Beach. By contrast, the picturesque harbour town of Paphos to the West is all about clean good fun and well suited to families and the middle-aged.

Aphrodite’s Rock on the Limassol-Paphos coastal road running parallel to the motorway near Pissouri Village is recommended for a sea dip, as you might stay young forever!

The magnificent Trodos mountains beckon, always cool even in mid-summer. Just hire a 4×4 and look out for hairpin bends, Greek-Cypriot drivers and foreigners driving on the wrong side of the road.

Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, is also the last divided capital in the world. Great for shopping, if a bit crowded in summer. By contrast, the ghost town of Famagusta in the buffer zone between the Turkish north and Greek south is a place frozen in time, everything left as it was during the 1974 Turkish invasion. An eerie visit at best.

Did you know that Cyprus is one of the cheapest destinations in Europe?
