The advice goes like this: don’t bother with on-line research before travelling (especially if hiring a car’s a spur of the moment decision!) but do take local advice, it might save you a bundle. We’d like to add: make sure you’re properly insured in the 1st place, with comprehensive car insurance including excess waiver.

The local advice also included the drive to Sounion. The road winding south by the coast permitted simultaneous enjoyment of the views of Greek countryside on the left and the blue Aegean sea on the right.

The temple of Poseidon, ancient Greek god of the sea, originally consisted of 34 Doric white marble columns (only 15 remain). It is on a high cliff and was used by sailors as a landmark.

Some very beautiful crocus flowers were evident by the temple path, with wild turtles and partridges not too far away either.

A lovely and informal Greek restaurant serving fresh food and cool wine completed the experience and the drive back to Athens rounded up the day.
