Partner blogger europebudgetguide describes how to enjoy Oviedo, one of Europe’s natural paradises, on a budget. Oviedo, capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain, is also the administrative and commercial centre of the region.

Oviedo, the cultural heart of this region is a good place to both discover the true taste of northern Spain and explore it on a budget. You can get there from Stansted (plus local bus) or from Madrid – a bit less direct.

There are several good budget hotels to choose from and use as a base for exploring the city.

Oviedo may appear to be an apparently genteel and down-to-earth city, but it’s unusual character means that e.g. statues of obscure Madonnas are by the one of Woody Allen.

In the Old Town try walking down the colourful Calle Gascona, sample the local cider (1-2 euro/bottle) Oviedo style, then head for the wonderful choice of restaurants with tapas starting from around 3 euro (15 euro for a complete meal, or you may find some menus of the day including wine for under 10 euro).

Oviedo festivals like the Mardi Gras in March or San Juan in June are unique and free Celtic celebrations, complete with bagpipe players.

Oviedo’s own Christ the Redeemer is a great hike up the local mountain, the reward being the physical high, fantastic views and a brilliant walk with a healthy appetite on the way back.

If you’re in the north of Spain, also try visiting coastal San Sebastian, possibly the most beautiful Spanish city.
