The 5,600 hectares reserve is located between Almere and Lelystad (central province of the Netherlands) at a shallow bay of the North sea in the country’s northwest. It contains a beautiful lake (Markemeer), named after a small former island that lies within it.
Oostvaardersplassen provides the habitat for several species of rare and unusual birds like the Great Cormorant, common Spoonbill, Great Egret and White-tailed Eagle, as well as Konik horses, red Deer and Heck cattle.
The plan is for Oostvaardersplassen to become part of “Oostvaardersland” (by 2015) and eventually part of the Europe-wide habitat network Natura 2000.
If nature reserves are your thing, head straight for Spain’s Picos de Europa National Park.
