Partner DLuxeHotels writes on the special destination of Marseille, southern France’s main port on the Mediterranean. The setting for Dantès daring body-bag escape and Dumas’s Count of Monte Christo. One of the best views of the city is from Chateau d’If.

Le Vieux Port de Marseille, by Marc DUPUY
The reputation of Marseille as the dirty and poor relative of Nice or Monaco is not necessarily deserved. Rather, Marseille has always been proud to have a very active working port with all its accompanying implications. Unfortunately, the gritty film French Connection depicting the true story of drug trafficking from Turkey through France to the United States cannot have helped the reputation of this iconic place much!
Energetic, bustling and multicultural Marseille can sometimes be reminiscent of some African ports as opposed to Europe. Becoming a European Capital of Culture in 2013 will be appropriate for this accepting, multi-ethnic society that’s packed with museums and cultural institutions, boasts a famous opera house and is probably France’s mainstage pop and hip hop scene.
The rich Mediterranean cuisine with great waterfront restaurants, serving authentic ” la Bouillabaisse” local fish and shellfish soup and some fantastic local wines, can also be appropriate start points for several multicultural explorations.
Marseille is also a good centre for visiting some of France’s most amazing Roman ruins and is a short hop to either Corsica or Sardinia.
