Partner Inside the Travel Lab writes on some rather unusual aspects of seductive Venice. Europe tours to this well known part of Italy expect churches, canals and gondolas, which they get in spades, but there’s much more to this famous location than meets the (tourist) eye.

Ask about Venice (La Serenissima) and you’re told of waterways, grand church squares and the Bridge of Sighs – but there’s more on the menu than just the signature cuttlefish in black ink sauce served with polenta!

A quick wonder away from the beaten path will lead you to beautiful canal-side buildings with painted shutters and peeling plaster, joined by lines of laundry across the water, modern-day romeos driving speedboats (too fast!) and the sounds of normal Italians in conversation, laughter even (baby) tears – a quick reminder that Venice does indeed have true inhabitants!

Gondoliers having a smoke and coffee break lounging in the sun – this is indeed Il Ghetto, as far as we know the archetypal, name-giving and classiest of all ghettos on the planet! History shows that Il Ghetto started life as a Middle Ages community restricted to badge-wearing Jewish citizens! Although today the restrictions no longer exist, kosher food, stars of David and synagogues are very much in evidence.
