Loket Castle, Czech Republic, by Jim Linwood
Your trip’s start/end could in any case be in Prague, so make the most of it, but do avoid the crowds! Visit the Charles Bridge lined with artisans (and their wares!), the enormous complex of churches, chambers and gardens forming Castle Hill and the City Gallery for its modern art, Communist hues and Czech classics. Finally sample some Czech food; just follow your nose and those salivating glands! You may also want to Czech out our additional recommendations for unusual pastimes in Prague!
The beautiful spa town of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) may not be best visited for the foul tasting (reputedly healing) water or for rubbing shoulders with the predominantly German and Russian tourists, but make sure you try the sweet cinnamon wafers washed down with Becherovka.
The river walks and winding city streets of extremely picturesque Cesky Krumlov will also impress, while you should only make a beeline for industrial Plzen if you love your food and beer.
Brno , the country’s second largest city and University town, comes complete with grand castle featuring creepy catacombs, but is also great for its relaxed food and cafe culture – a great place to chill out Czech style!
Tiny but perfectly formed university town Telc is a secret gem. Finally, a visit to the Republic would not be complete without dropping into the amazing and atmospheric Punkevn caves.
So, there’s certainly plenty available fior those on European travel through the Czech Republic – you certainly don’t need to restrict yourself to Prague!
