The 800 kilometers of coastline, medieval villages and seaside towns are mostly enjoyed by the locals, so now the secret’s out!

Calabria’s capital city, Catanzaro, located between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, is just 30 minutes from the Lamezia Terme airport. Great beaches not to your taste? One of Catanzaro’s nearby attractions, the La Sila National Park, littered with Alpine villages and national forests, is a great place for day trips and many nature trail hikes.

Calabria is also full of ancient Roman and Greek ruins and world-renown for tasty traditional cooking. Look out for pork dishes, tasty veggies (e.g. aubergines or Tropea onions), fresh fruit like figs and bergamot and the local olive oil and red chilli peppers.

Not convinced yet? I am told that car hire is some of the cheapest in Italy and restaurant prices pretty reasonable too; sounds like a great destination for traveling Europe. For a great selection of other ideas, see our “off the beaten track” suggestions for Italy travel.
