Those considering European travel including visiting Hungary should be aware that it is a pretty varied country which, with the exception of Budapest, remains largely unknown and unexplored.

Tokaj is a world heritage town of about 2000 souls, Füzér a small town of 500 near the border with Slovakia.

Tokaj is world-famous for its wine, with Tokaj Aszu even mentioned in the national anthem! A widely distributed wine fungus results in intensely flavoured sweet dessert wines. Tokaj supermarkets could be much improved and accommodation can be a bit of a lottery, as one can get lovely and homely or bunker-style depending on unknowns!

Füzér is dominated by a partly restored 13th Century private castle on a hill above and the town serves possibly the best goulash Hungary! If this wasn’t enough, for afters a local type of fettucini with home made raspberry jam left the author speechless with delight!

Wine tasting sessions in both towns may seem a bit expensive, but the wine you drink costs a small proportion of what you’d pay for it commercially.

This glimpse into Hungary suggests that the place is not yet too ‘touristy’ and although careful, the Europe tour visitor can end up having a delightful time for not too much, as long as some care and discrimination are practised.

Besides Tokaj the border town of Eger is also interesting to visit. The castle is a great museum and provides wonderful views of the town. Eger is the home to Bull’s Blood, the fieryd red wine that made the Magyars win from the Turks in the legendary 16th century battle. Nowadays it is no more the plonk you find on the bottom of too many supermarkets, but high quality, 5 star. Look for St. Andrea, Thummerer or Gal.
