Partners Europe up Close bring us an article about hiking. This time on part of the longest footpath in Scotland, the West Highland Way. The 152km (95 mile) route starts (or ends!) at Glasgow’s up-market Milngavie district, goes past Loch Lomond, continues through disused drovers paths, old abandoned railway lines, pastoral/hilly/mountainous land, several villages and towns heading all the way north-west, finally finishing at Fort William in the coastal Highlands.

As the hike traverses different terrains, such as lowland moors, woodland and mountains in the Scottish Highlands, there’s high chance of meeting some of the friendliest and most delightful creatures as featured above. Don’t be afraid of the long horns, these beasties are just very curious. The usual advice is to have dogs under control and if they get too near the cattle do not try to save them, as they are quite capable of doing so themselves!

The original article describes the Devil’s Staircase particularly well, with mentions of the views to Ben Nevis (Scotland’s highest mountain) and Buachaille Etive Mor. So there’s loads of activities to pack in the Scottish stop of your Europe tour.

Now, do remember that this is western Scotland, and make sure you have both your waterproofs (all year round!) and anti-midge spray/cream/oil in summer, as the critters can eat you alive!

If you are visiting Scotland, one good way to get on the Western Highland Way and other great walks is to initially contact good local hiking clubs, such as the Stirling Hillwalking club, who’s experienced and friendly members will give you the lowdown and most possibly invite you along as a guest for some of their superbly organised walks. And if you find yourself near Inverness, Highlands capital, it may be worth hiking to the Black Isle if only to try some great organic beer!
