Partner Heather on her travels showcases the historic dockyard at Portsmouth. She recommends the dockyards, as well as the nearby Gunwharf Quay Shopping Centre, as an excellent family day out.

The shopping centre, which sells designer brands at reduced prices and includes a multi-screen cinema, is easy to reach either by train to Portsmouth station or by car and there are excellent parking facilities.

For snacks/meals, there are several characterful pubs with marina views on the quayside.

The Historic dockyard’s primary attraction  is the battleship HMS Victory, with which Lord Nelson led the British Fleet to win the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. A guided tour is pricey (£12.50 adult/£8.50 child), but very well worth the expense. An all-inclusive ticket (£18 adult/£13.50 child) should only be bought if one has a whole day to see additional exhibits such as: HMS Warrior, the Mary Rose, Action Stations and Harbour Tours.

All in all certainly enough for a great family day out – or two!

For some other suggestions on family days out in England, consider the Eden Project in Cornwall and family-friendly parks in Leeds.

Thanks for the mention – it was a great day out and there’s also the spinnaker tower where you get a great view – I think the photo you feature must have been taken from there.
