Fellow blog Lanzarote Magazine posted an article on the funds approved for the building of a Palace of Congress in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote Los Hervideros, by Robby van Moor
Lanzarote is the easternmost of the autonomous Canary Islands of Spain, which lie about 125km off the west coast of Africa. As such, the very volcanic Lanzarote boasts year-round sunshine. But the powers that be have concluded that to attract, and keep attracting the tourist trade more than just rays are needed. Hence the Palace of Congress, which should be able to provide an appropriate space for cultural events and conventions. All at the cost of two million euros, which may be a moderate price to pay for such an important investment in the island’s socio-economic future (as long as it does not go over budget, which such projects have a nasty habit of doing regularly!)
So, keep looking out for the Palace on your next holiday to Lanzarote! The architects have already been chosen (from 52 comperting bids in total!) and tourist Councillor Rita Martin promised that the work will start soon and no later than autumn 2010! (I guess with all the other building work going on in the island, it must be difficult to find qualified personnel!)
