Partner site eyeflare describe London’s Hyde Park, a huge (350 acre) play area for the whole of the city’s centre! The park’s beauty and size can be appreciated when considering that it comes complete with a pretty large lake, the Serpentine, which is suitable for rowing – and all this in the classiest part of one of the world’s grandest cities! The Park’s use was changed  from hunting grounds for royals to public in 1637 by Charles I.

I certainly remember many a good times spent walking through the park or rowing in the Serpentine when we lived in London in the early 80’s. Hyde Park is certainly within walking distance from some of London’s highlights, such as the Palace and Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street, the London Eye, the Thames Embankment, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the Victoria and Albert museum, St James Park, Harrods, King’s Road in Chelsea….you get the idea! Again, I’ve had the opportunity to do these walks, obviously over several different days, and you can both get a very good feel for London and enjoy city centre and countryside within the same day!

A recent addition (2004) was the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain, another of London’s top attractions. The Park is also the venue of choice for several musical and cultural events in London’s diary every year.

Hyde Park’s unmissable if visiting London. For something else unusual, see our own suggestions  of free  things to do on the South Bank.
