England’s oldest National Park lies between Manchester and Sheffield, i.e. between two population-dense areas, thus serving as an ideal short-distance getaway for a great number of people. The Park has loads of character and diverse natural beauty, while also mingling history with ample chance for sporting activity.

The visitors went to the reservoir of Ladybower, which was created in the twentieth century near Sheffield by flooding the villages of Derwent and Ashopton (which still lie underwater!) It’s a well chosen spot, as it’s  renown for its high rainfall. Which brings us neatly to good advice for today’s visitor: Don’t forget your waterproofs, regarless of the time of year!

Great rugged countryside views and walks mixed with charming small villages featuring traditional pubs and characterful ales drank by open fireplaces, where the party’s clothes lost water in the form of steam! If one was not a drinker, one did not need to despair, as one was in Bakewell Tart country!

And this was only day one! Read the original and follow the links to days 2 and 3.

The Peak District is only one of the suggested 100+ cheap weekends for Brits.
