Europe a la Carte describes the traditional Christmas markets in Vienna in a guest post by travel writer Anne-Sophie Redisch.

Rathaus Christkindlmarkt, Vienna, by chad_k
The Vienna Christmas market trradition dates from 1626, and some of the best known locations include Spittelberg, Schloss Belvedere, Schönbrunn and Rathausplatz. Some markets are in large squares, others along narrow cobbled lanes and passageways and there’s even one by the beautiful baroque palace of Belvedere!
Alluring mental images of Vienna’s markets include beeswax candles alongside blown glass and wooden toys, while simultaneously the smells of roasting chestnuts, fresh baking and mulled wine attack the olfactory (and the imagination!)
There’s also plenty for the kids, with various shows and workshops on baking and other traditional crafts abounding.
Some people cannot help but fall in love with Vienna, and I guess the Christmas markets must add to this city’s spell!
