Partners EuropeUpClose write on Finland’s Turku and explain why it was called the “First City” back in 1280.

Turku: Aura Joki (River) Spring Thaw, by Steve Weaver
Turku from the 1300′s onwards was established as a merchant city, complete with cathedral and castle, then for the next five centuries occupied a central location characterized by wealth and prestige. So, from the start, Turku has been one classy city, and it even served as a capital between 1809 and 1812.
Turku is another example of a European walled city previously frequented by knights and Vikings, and is in an excellent form of preservation. The Castle and the Green Triangle (a collection of green parks connected with nature trails) are must visits, as are the islands, each with different character, making up the Archipelago, also conveniently well connected by road bridges.
Nowadays Turku is most lively, with a thriving (also ancient!) University. The city has several interesting markets, plays host to music festivals and is renown for its night life that includes an eclectic mix of East (Russian) and West (mainland European) influences.

You may also wish to visit Finland’s beautiful capital Helsinki, where some of the best attractions may be cheap to reasonably priced. When you’ve sampled the city, see our recommendations for day trips.
