220,000 litre barrel by Neckar River: Heidelberg, Germany

Catchy isn’t it? It certainly caught my attention when partner site Travel Wonders of the World revealed the location of what’s got to be the world’s biggest wine barrel!

The Heidelberg Tun or Grosses Fass is located in Heidelberg Castle and comes complete with staircase leading to a dance floor!

Look behind you, by ripkas (Possibly a smaller cousin of the Heidelberg beast?)

Like a lot of other big man-made wonders, the Tun did not get to see too much use, which even Mark Twain commented on! This was possibly because it was originally constructed to hold (liquid!) taxes and even got attacked by Napoleonic soldiers when actually empty!

Still, a visit to the castle is most worthwhile, even if only for viewing the nearby famous cruising river Neckar and Heidelberg from a most panoramic point! Also, don’t forget to commiserate with the statue of Italian dwarf keeper of the Tun, Perkeo, who despite his love of wine actually met his end by drinking water!

Have you visited Heidelberg and its castle, what are your impressions of the city?
