Fellow bloger Inside the Travel Lab describes impressions of Espelette (Basque: Ezpeleta) in the French south west near Biarritz and St Jean Pied de Port.

Un coin de campagne quelque part aux environs d’Espelette, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Aquitaine, Pays Basque, France, Juin 2009. By dynamosquito
The author was quite impressed by the chalk-white houses, spotless streets and, unusually by the peppers (les piments d’Espelette) which were literally climbing the walls (not in exasperation, but, apparently, quite happily!) These colourful local characters have, in the French tradition, been awarded their own Appellation Contrôlée by the government! It follows that piment souvenirs of every description (e.g. salt and pepper containers, pimento flavoured/coloured cheese, fridge magnets etc) mix happily with other Basque products like cured ham, bouquets of chocolate and cherry wine.
The countryside isn’t bad either! All in all a great location to enjoy rural France’s comfortable pace and joie de vivre! Also, the Basque seaside is one of five great European shorelines to enjoy.
Have you visited the rural area in France’s Basque region, what were your impressions?
