Partner Wandering Italy poses the question Tuscany or Provence, and goes a long way towards providing comprehensive answers to satisfy all types of potential travelers.

Bicyclette de Provence, by FrenchDuck
The two areas are hot favourites with many Europe travelers, and in the article issues such as food, real estate and open air markets are certainly given a good comparative airing.
There’s a good amount of detail, for example cheese varieties and numbers of butchers are compared, as are property prices for either buying outright or renting.
The article was quite fair in saying that there’s more than enough in both regions to both enchant and satisfy all manner of visitor. However, it was my impression that the author (James Martin, who as I understand lives in Tuscany) came in favour of Tuscany mainly on cost comparisons.
I am not sure if I can agree or disagree with the conclusions, as, in my opinion, Italy’s lovely but expensive, particularly for us Brits in the last 2 or so years with the drop in value of the pound. In contrast, I’ve certainly had several lovely, not too expensive holidays all over France prior to this devaluation. However, it’s possible that I am also thinking of relative costs of getting there, since France is more accessible by car from the UK. So, my opinion might simply be different on the basis of past experience. Also, as I’ve been to Tuscany more recently, I’d like to visit Provence’s Avignon, not least as there are now flights directly from my local airport!
I guess it’ll be up to travelers who’ve been to both locations recently to also contribute to the discussion, so please leave a comment! In any case, there’s no doubt that whether you visit either Tuscany or Provence you won’t go far wrong!
