Eurocheapo inform us of where in Rome you can see Caravaggio paintings for free (and also where you need to pay!)

CARAVAGGIO Rest during the flight from Egypt, circa 1597, by carulmare
The free venues are dotted all over the city of Rome and there is no time limit of when you can see the paintings. Art tourists can visit locations such as Via Sant’ Agostino, Via Giustiniani and Piazza Del Popolo.
By contrast, the pay to view venues are the Villa Borghese (exhibition until January 24, 2010) and the Capitolina museum, the latter being available on the 23 euro Roma pass that also includes city transport for 3 days.
More detail on specific artworks and how/when best to access them in the original article above.
If you are going to Rome not just for the (free) culture, but would also wish to sample the best of Italian chic on the cheap, read about the San Giovanni Market.
