Partner Cheap Weekend breaks tells us how to add another dimension to our travels by going back in time (17,000 years, or therebouts, to be inexact!) when visiting the Lascaux caves in Dordogne.

Lascaux II, by JackVersloot
The caves, discovered accidentaly in the 1940’s, contain 1000+ paintings in charcoal and ochre of prehistoric horses, bulls, reindeer and humans. As such, they constitute the world’s oldest art.
But wait, don’t get too excited! After more than 100,000 visitors, the scene begun crumbling and misting over, not least due to human breath forming ice crystals and destroying the fine detail preserved possibly for eternity in only about 20 years! Unusually, the solution was to replicate (!) part of the scene, which is what you get to see when visiting modern Lacaux. Where this article scores is in the description of a traveller’s feelings before, during and after visiting this giant scale replica, which I will not reveal, but you can discover by reading the original (please click above). For those inclined to cynicism amongst you, it’s a surprise ending!
