Europe a la carte features a guest post by Margaret Doherty on the Bernese Oberland, bang in the centre of the Swiss Alps.

Overlooking the Lauterbrunnen… By Rutger de Moddertukker
The post is most detailed and extensive, giving the potential visitor a real taste of what should be expected. Descriptions such as ‘Small herds of goats dot the steep hills above wooden chalets…’ abound, conjuring strong mental images of the area’s atmosphere (in addition to several quality piccies already within the post!)
There are excellent descriptions of day trips and several other activities from the UNESCO World Heritage village of Lauterbrunnen in the heart of Switzerland’s Alpine region, making it an ideal spot from which to explore the region. Modes of transport (trains, cable-cars, buses and private mountain railways) are well described and links to tourist boards and other facilities given.
The car-free towns of Murren and Wengen are also featured. In the latter, the visitor is recommended to take the cable car up to the Mannlichen plateau overlooking the valley towards Grindelwald and Grund, surrounded by mountain peaks.
Another notable trip is to the ‘Top of Europe’, where the train actually goes through the Eiger (mountain) and even stops twice while inside it!
Additional, different trips, now around the Lakes of Thun and Brienz are also beautifully described.
The post finishes with tips and advice appropriate to this extreme region of the planet. For our tip on an unusual (and cost-effective?) way to relax after an arduous day at the slopes, see…
