TravelGeneration offer top tips for coping with flight delays. Ranging from a few minutes to several hours or days in extreme cases, delays are commonplace and always both unexpected and unwelcome. Although the article mainly discusses air travel, the tips apply equally to several types of travel.

When flight delays do occur, passengers are left to their own devices (with only few notable and expensive exceptions). Passengers are even made to feel grateful when (and if!) informed about any possible progress. This type of airline behaviour is due to our competitive times, when ‘frills’ and staff time for PR are cut in favour of cheaper fares.
Flight delays have different effects on passengers, depending on age, health, family status and general disposition. While some frequent travelers take delays in their stride, at the other extreme some passengers may reach near despair. Therefore, some of the tips may apply more or less, depending on personality and circumstances.
The tips range from the obvious ‘don’t panic’ (easier said than done, e.g if you’re going to either a wedding or a funeral!), to advice on ways to relax (e.g. to have a shower if in a hot airport) and to checking out your travel insurance for reimbursables. All tips are well-thought out and obviously offered on the basis of wide travel experience.
I think I’ll print them out and carry with me for my next trip. Who knows, they may make amusing reading at the very least, if not actually being helpful, particularly at a time when I’ll not be thinking too straight!
Do you have any additional tips on how to preserve one’s sanity when flight delays occur?
