Patrner Off to Europe published their Guide to Gondola Rides in Venice. In my opinion, considering the popularity of the (very slowly!) sinking island, this guide is long overdue!

Gondola Border from Christina Welsh (Rin)
They discuss the all important cost (e.g. currently, a 50-minute ride should cost €62), ouch, but hey, this is the fare for the whole boat/trip, so for the not romantically inclined, it can be split between the number of passengers a gondola should be able to hold (up to 6). They also discuss different trips, and suggest alternatives to e.g. just going along the Grand Canal.
So, a neat and useful little guide. For my own tuppence worth, I would also recommend that you stay somewhere close, e.g. Treviso, and travel in to Venice, as hotels in Venice can be pricey. Also, I’d choose a Venice restaurant where the gondoliers eat – when we visited on our anniversary this made us feel as part of the scene as opposed to being surrounded by other tourists.
