Andy Hayes, member of the blogging team at sister site Europe a la Carte, writes a most extensive and detailed article on county Durham, in England’s north-east. The article is a real eye-opener, providing extensive coverage of several venues including Durham Cathedral and Castle, the Vennels (interesting winding alleys in the historic centre of Durham) and South Causey to the northwest of Durham City, to mention a few.

University College, Durham (Durham Castle) Crypt, by Cornell…
He also provides a list of current hot tips specific to visiting Durham city. There’s good advice on accommodation, where to find great cakes and suchlike!
County Durham is a well-kept secret by the locals, as most visitors from the South either don’t make it further north than York, or travel past/through county Durham (and Newcastle!) to Scotland’s capital Edinburgh (for which Andy has also just published a great little walks guide). This leaves Durham county mostly to be discovered, and the post described is a good starting guide!
Have you visited county Durham, is there anywhere in particular you’d recommend?
