Eurocheapo informs us of the Open Heritage Days in Amsterdam this September 12-13 inclusive. Places such as the Royal Palace, the Artis Zoo and the Oude Kerk (old church) are being opened up to the public these two days, with much more (both free and on a pay-basis) to see and do.

For more information on these 2-day events, see Open Heritage Day. Surely a short visit to Amsterdam with all its usual attractions and easy flight connections during early autumn is well worth it, even without the freebies!
