Our member 501 Places features Istanbul, Turkey’s beautiful city located at the cross-roads between East and West.

Aya Sofia – Istanbul, by Simona Scolari
This grand and unique city is well known for its rich Greek and Byzantine history, fantastic architecture and natural location, spice and gold bazaars, and of course great food. On this last note, check out Top Travel Content Europe member site Istanbul Eats for tips on the best restaurants and cafes, if only so you can savour those delicious mini dumplings featured just now!
The original article is a ‘before and now’ description of the authors’ experiences, and nicely describes how Istanbul has grown up in the last 15 years to become a little more organised and sophisticated while retaining its alure and mystique of the past.
For a unique visit to the far East end of Europe, Istanbul is tops.
STOP PRESS: today’s publication of this post coincided with the worst floods this city has seen for 80 years. Let’s hope that Istanbul , and its citizens, return to normality soon.

The mosque pictured is the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque), not Hagia Sofia as in the caption.
In either case, two beautiful buildings to visit, each with amazing art and history.
