Alexandra from Arttrav took a day trip from Florence to the Tuscan town of Certaldo. The jounrey takes around 50 minutes by train from Florence. The town is best known as the final residence of the Italian author and poet Giovanni Boccaccio, to whom one of the towns’ three museums is dedicated. Certaldo is also famous for purple onions, one even being portrayed on the towns’ medieval symbol.

The historic old town, in the photo above, can be reached by foot, road or funicular from the lower town, the location of the railway station. Fortunately Certaldo has not been marred by mass tourism and still retains its medieval charm.
Have you visited Certaldo, would you recommend it?
