Could you stand the heat at the Siena Palio?

The Siena Palio is a horse race held twice a year on 2 July and 16 August in the Tuscan city of Siena. It’s a traditional event dating from the 17th century in which competitors vie for the honour of winning the Palio, a silk banner depicting the Virgin Mary.

I liked the list of Dos and Don’t for Visitors in the post. It made me realise that I’m not sure how much of the event you’d actually see tightly packed into the square in the Summer heat with no possibility of leaving until the crowd began to dispense after the event.
