Reading this post about a cobbler in Sicily made me wonder if we are missing something in our modern, everything’s disposable society? Even the idea of people taking their shoes to a cobbler seems alien, it’s a chicken and egg situation because with the high price of labour unless you buy expensive shoes it’s not economically viable to pay the price of a repair. It’s seemes cheaper, easier and more fun just to throw away the old shoes and buy a new pair

In fact when I carried out a Flickr search for “cobbler’ it was photos of either a dessert with a doughy top or the Scottish mountain that appeared.
The idea of having the same job in the same place for life is another concept from bygone times. While one shouldn’t romanticise too much about it, it must have been hard, repetitive, smelly work repairing shoes all day but there was the satisfaction of seeing the product of your work and the chats with regular customers to break up the day.
What do you think? Do places like local cobblers shops give a sense of community, add to the character of a place and provide an environmentally friendly service?
