Three European destinations make it into the Tripbase Top 10 Recession Friendly Vacations, albeit in positions eight, nine and ten. The cheapest European destination is Monte Gordo in Portugal with an average daily spend of 44 US dollars per day on food and lodging for budget travel. Polis in Cyprus is calculated at $57 a day and Budapest in Hungary is not so budget friendly at $70 a night.

Do you agree with this? I really like Polis in Cyprus and I’ve been on a couple of Winter Sun package holidays to Cyprus and would have loved to stay in Polis but it was much cheaper to stay in Paphos.
Of course the other issue for calculating your overall trip cost is the price of the flight, so although Asia is much cheaper, your flight there from the UK is going to be more expensive. So, unless you are going for a long trip, Europe will probably be cheaper overall if you can bag a cheap flight with a low cost airline.
