The 2009 Tour de France cycling race, covering six countries, runs from 4 – 26 July. If you’re a real fan you’ll probably be hitching your tent as you follow the route. This will allow you to reserve the premium roadside vantage points.

If you just want to see part of the race and don’t have your own transport, two or four wheeled, a couple of the best locations for spectators to base themselves are Montpelier or Verbier because of their good rail links.
