Beware of inadvertanetly pulling a bathroom cord in Italy, lest armed police storm into the bathroom to investigate, as happened to one extremely shocked lady at Rome Fiumicino airport.

Evidently Italian law dictates that all hotel and public bathrooms in Italy must have an emergency chord, the problem seems to be that there is no standard response once the alarm is raised. Yes, it could prompt a visit from the carbinieri or more likely no response at all. That is if you can even reach the chord which may hang tantalisingly out of reach as you lie on the bathroom floor after a slip.
Have you had any unfortunate entanglements with Italian bathroom cords?
